DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALL AT ONCE!
The 1st step to clean living is change. Let’s talk about change. If you are a bit like me (bless you and I feel you here) and have any tendencies towards extreme self-doubt, anxiety, depression, or just easily getting overwhelmed, then I am talking to you here.
Do not feel like you have to do it all at once, or guess what? Nothing will get done! You may feel defeated before you even start or feel so excited that you have to do it all at once and don’t know where to start and jump all in and then do none of it when it actually is right there in front of you.
START WITH ONLY ONE THING!
First, off let me remind you that this is a positive thing….don’t get bogged down in trying to revamp your entire life all at once.
Just start with one thing at a time and watch as the scales fall off your eyes and you begin to see clearly (maybe for the first time) the back to basic simple ways there are to improve your overall health and life.
We tend to think in an “all or nothing” mentality a lot in our society and present culture. That isn’t how God designed us. He didn’t design us to live our entire life in one day. He designed us to be born, grow up, and keep growing and keep learning until He decides its time for us to go home.
It’s more than OK to take it one thing at a time. In fact, if you don’t start off with just one thing at a time, you may not know which new thing you are starting has the effect that you are noticing. It’s actually preferred, in my mind (and helps keep my anxiety way far away), to just do one thing at a time.
Then guess what happens? Yup…you guessed it. You can add the next thing. Little by little pieces to the new puzzle you are building are coming together for a beautiful picture.
ACCEPT THAT IT’S AN ONGOING JOURNEY!
Change takes time, and it is a process and a journey, not a destination. As we are always learning and growing, there will always be new things to learn and grow. There is never a stopping point where we get to stand up and say, “yup…i’m good guys…got this entire life thing figured out for you and me…every bit of it from stop to start in every detail of every possibility.” Yah..if you ever think that, please warn me so I can back up and not get caught in the lightning strike that may be coming.
Why are we so hard, not only on ourselves but on others who are trying to learn and grow and improve their own beautiful lives? Why must we think it is so wrong to grow and change and instead we long so deeply to keep things staying the way they have always been?
When did we stop being thrilled by the overwhelming desire to discover new things, learn new details, explore new areas and facets of life?
If we keep a child-like mindset of utter fascination with the world itself and decide to look harder, journey further, investigate more, we just may discover again what a true joy it is when that spark of curiosity is engaged in the learning and growth process.
Are you wanting to learn something new but don’t know where to start? That really is OK! Just start! We all have to start somewhere. Don’t let that derail your thrill for discovery.
Are you curious about a topic that people consider mostly off-limits, but you simply want to know what information is out there? Great! Get going! Dive in. Don’t worry about pleasing others with what you do…otherwise, you will never learn anything.
Now, do we have that all straight? OK, well once your mindset is excited to learn, it can be tempting to do a whole bunch of things at once, but remember, slow down…ONE THING AT A TIME!
And don’t get me wrong, I am all about multi-tasking and having things working for me (like the washer and dryer) while I am working and so on, but one new change at a time so you can do it well and see what the results are for you and your life!
It doesn’t mean there won’t be times when you will be implementing many new things at once that you don’t have to worry about the change. For example, if you are getting a lot of fun orders in the mail like some bamboo straws at the same time you are getting bamboo paper towels and stuff like that. Obviously, you don’t need to separate that out.
I am speaking more towards my people who want to totally overhaul their lives towards clean living. If we are starting with clean eating, one thing at a time. If we are starting with sustainable everyday products, you can do many at a time. If we are starting with implementing different processes in the home, like setting up a recycling center well then you want to take it one process at a time, so you can focus on that and give yourself and family time to implement that change and then move onto the next thing.
CUSTOM DESIGN IT FOR YOUR LIFE!
There is total freedom in designing your life how it works best for you…God designed it that way too! It’s not better or worse if you are a night owl or morning person, just the same as it’s not a big deal if you eat Keto, Paleo, Vegan, or any other eating plans.
You have to do what works for your specific body, family, and life. It’s all up to you, so rest in the freedom and liberty that God has gifted you in this beautiful thing called LIFE! It will always be evolving and changing, so just buckle in for the ride and know that you are welcome here and you are enough!
This of course also means you have to be open-minded enough to be willing to be wrong. What do I mean by that?
Well, that to me is the coolest part about researching and learning and growing…it’s what learning is about at its core, essentially.
Recently one of my kids told me they didn’t want to do their math because it was hard. I explained that’s the whole point. It is hard for your brain right now because you don’t know it yet. You don’t know it, so your brain is having to open up in new ways as it is being taught to you. It’s the same no matter our age or what we are learning. I spent months in tears of frustration and learning blocks learning WordPress and other software to get my blog up and running. Learning can be hard, but also exciting to grow and change in new ways, but we have to be willing!
As you research, discover, and implement new things, do so with an excited, but lighthearted approach. Once we take things too seriously, it can become something where we make our stand. Instead, be willing to be wrong as you embark on new endeavors as it keeps your mind always open and ready to absorb and learn more!
THE VERY FIRST STEP
Pick just one simple thing that won’t overwhelm you or your family to change and just do that one thing.
Consider these small changes: changing your hand soap, your face washing routine, the supplements you are putting in your body. While they may see small, they can make a big lasting impact on your short term and long term mental and physical health.
Then once you have made one change, wait a bit, maybe a few days or a week, and you make another, and before you know it, there is a domino effect of healthier choices that you have begun and are now well into your clean living journey!
One final note: Don’t be so hard on yourself…there will be setbacks along the way, frustrations, misunderstandings…that is all part of the learning process! It takes practice for it to become a habit and habits for it to become part of your routine. It will happen…just give yourself a little grace! 🙂
