Back-to-Basics, Simplicity, and Less Toxicity is something we can all use more of in our everyday routines. So, we are bringing to you today one of the cleanest, most simple, back-to-basics, effective ways you may have not heard of to do something that you most likely do at least once a day.
What are we talking about here?
Washing your face! Why is this so different? Because we are going to show you how and why you should consider washing your face with oil! Yes, you read that right! Why you should consider washing your face with oil! This is the back-to-basics and most effective method to wash your face!
THE STARTING POINT
We have become too programmed to look at marketing and packaging when it comes to making purchases in our lives. Whether it be food, toiletries, skin care products, or any number of other items we use on the daily.
Let’s take a step back and think clearly for a moment about this one thing. Skin Care. The skin care industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and for good reason. We are all searching for a good way to take care of the skin we are in so that motivation is the right one, but it’s leading us in the wrong direction. Let’s step out of the skincare aisle with all their chemical laden products and into the “I can think for myself aisle” when it comes to skin care.
FORMER MENTALITY
I spent much of my childhood in the dermatologists’ office and suffered from extreme acne, so I am not speaking of this from some perfect skin vantage point. I am one of the MAIN ONES that was always saving my own money just to spend it on the premium skin care lines for my skin. My parents probably dropped a small fortune that they didn’t have to drop at the dermatologists’ office just in an effort to try and help me calm some of my very overactive sebum production. So, I am the legit deal when it comes to always searching for the best in skin care.
REVISED PERSPECTIVE
Now, however, I search in a different direction….THE NATURAL ONE!! God only gave us one life and one body, right? It is up to us to take the best possible care we can of that precious gift.
Our skin, we tend to forget, is an organ, and it is the LARGEST one we have!
I don’t know at what point in my journey it was, but one day I flipped over the back of a very expensive cleanser that I was about to purchase and saw the longest list of ingredients, most of which I couldn’t pronounce.
So, I took out my phone and right there in the store started researching EACH ingredient! Well, the majority of the ingredients listed were man-made chemicals that were known cancer-causing, endocrine disruptors, immune suppressors, unsanitary, and unsafe chemicals.
I was shocked and to be honest a bit ticked off. This is what kick-started my natural health journey when it comes to skincare! Now keep in mind our family had already been clean eating for about 5 years now. But for some reason, I hadn’t at this point made the connection to also clean up our skin care routine and how that heavily affects our overall physical and mental health.
THE RESULTS
After days, weeks, and months of researching different methods and suggestions, we found many wonderful all-natural and beneficial ways to cleanse and take care of our family’s skin! One of those ways is the highlight of the article today….OIL CLEANSING!
Our family’s results are that our skin has never been softer, looked more vibrant and looked hydrated and clearer than it is since we started washing our face this way!
THE SCIENCE
For about 6 years or so I have been washing my face with oil. And while that sounds counterintuitive, let’s dive into some of the science behind it. I encourage you to not take my word for it, but research it for yourself and see what you discover!
There is science and chemistry itself that proves the “like supports like” or “like attracts like” idea. Think of it like this. Water attracts water due to the positive and negative of the hydrogen and oxygen atoms being drawn to each other. Water is a polar molecule and because of its polarity, water molecules are attracted to each other.
Following that logic, the “like attracts like” supports that “oil draws out oil” conclusion. Like attracts like is one of those chemistry facts that we somehow forgot to carry over into our everyday lives. Having always had what was deemed an “oily” face, I know now that it would have totally helped me get rid of so much of that excess oil I was harboring by simply washing my face with oil!
Now I know that it totally helps my oily face to wash my face with oil as the oil and sebum and grease in my facial pores are drawn out by the oil I am using to wash my face.
THE DETOX
Now, keep in mind, as with anything new when you are disrupting what your body is used to (much the same when you begin clean eating), there will most likely be a short detox period.
For our skin what this looks like can be a temporary detox. You may experience for a short time more breakouts as the excess oils are being DRAWN OUT of your skin!!!
I think for me, it lasted about a week, but because I knew it was part of the process ahead of time and had experienced these types of detox symptoms before when we started our clean eating journey, I understood it was only a part of the process. What’s crazy too is that I can remember although I was having a few more breakouts during my detox phase, my skin already felt softer and less angry if that makes sense. I could tell from the inside feeling that my skin wasn’t as hungry or thirsty anymore for cleaning.
It is also a necessary part of the process keep in mind. If the whole idea is to draw the oil and dirt and sebum out of the skin, then you should SEE some of those results initially, right? OK, then let’s get started!
WHICH OILS DO I USE?
There are so many beneficial, wonderful oils for so many different skin types and needs available right now. In this article, I am sharing with you the ones that work for our family. I encourage you to go do your own research and discover which may be best for you.
Coconut Oil: Coconut Oil has those amazing MCFA (Medium Chain Fatty Acids) that have great antimicrobial properties that can be very beneficial in fighting and preventing acne. It also has antifungal and antibiotic properties. It is also super moisturizing and is able to penetrate deeper into the skin than other oils. This truly is a wonder oil that supports in all the best ways!
Our family has become Coconut Oil snobs and will only use THIS COCONUT OIL as they are the only ones left that we have discovered that actually harvest the Coconut the traditional way instead of using big equipment and facilities. (oh, and bonus, if you are a first time customer clicking through this link, they will send you 3 free e-books all about the many amazing benefits of coconut oil!)
They take great care in every detail of the process. We have seen amazing results in our families lives in using this coconut oil vs. other ones we have tried. Their quality is like no other and we can solidly recommend it to you knowing we have used it for 6 years after trying many others and find this to be the TOP PICK for any coconut oil out there!
Apricot Kernel Seed Oil: This has become such a favorite of mine and my girls lately and it ends up feeling like such a luxurious experience! Apricot Kernel Seed Oil has great fatty acids and loaded with Vitamin A and E, which are great for dry or mature skin. I think the reason I have fallen for this oil lately is that it somehow gets absorbed but leaves no greasy residue or slick behind. It is so luxurious. Here is the one we are using presently! They also have a superior product so it is the only one of this type we will be using for now!
These are our top 2 faves for now, although there are plenty of other great choices out there. Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil, Castor Oil, and more. Just do your research first and be sure to get one that the only ingredient is the oil itself. Also, be sure it’s from a reputable company that knows what they are doing!
THE PROCESS
**Do NOT wash or wet your face before you do this or it will negate the entire process. This is an entirely different perspective and way of doing it. No need to remove your makeup either as it will do that all at once.**
1. Pull your hair back and get your oil, a washcloth, and hot water ready.
2. Put a few drops of the desired oil on your hands and massage into your face. Use this as a time to really, really massage…rub in circular motions, and go all over the face. Be sure to close your eyes so as not to get the oil in your eyes.
3. Once your face is fully covered and massaged with the oil, try to let it sit for a minute or two. You can work your way up to 5-10 minutes eventually, but for now, just keep it simple.
4. Get your washcloth completely covered with hot water and lay the entire washcloth gently over your face. This serves to open up the pores and be drawing all that excess sebum, dirt, and makeup out of your pores.
5. Once the cloth is no longer hot and you are ready, use the cloth to wipe all over your face, rinsing with hot water in between each wipe. Wipe over your entire face and be sure to wipe the eye makeup off as well if you did that area.
AFTER WASHING YOUR FACE
Your skin should feel super refreshed and hydrated all at once. At this point, you are done! That is it! If you feel you didn’t get it all, you are welcome to get your washcloth hot again and repeat the rinsing process. But don’t overdo it as your skin should feel hydrated at this point with no need for moisturizer.
Once this routine has become established for you and you are through the detox period, if you really feel the need for a toner and moisturizer, these are the all natural ones we use in our own family that we can solidly recommend to you. Since I have been doing this for years, I do now typically follow up with this toner and this moisturizer (their lotions and creams are both equally amazing!) adding a drop of this Frankincense essential oil to my moisturizer in my hand.
THAT’S IT, FOLKS!
A super simple, back-to-basics, good for you skin care routine that will save you LOADS AND LOADS OF CASH! For that, I sign off saying “You’re WELCOME” with a wink and a smile.
